This foundational course in special education law introduces the student to the legislative and legal frameworks that guide special education advocacy and delivery at the international, regional, and national (student’s country) levels. It explains the linkages and demarcations between advocacy and the law, and between the law and special education delivery.


The course is intended to provide newcomers to special education with a strong grounding in the relevant legislative and legal frameworks that govern individual, organizational, and societal design and delivery of special education, touching on the rights of persons with special needs and the responsibilities of their caregivers, education providers and the state/country.


The course comprises lectures, assignments, as well as formative and summative assessments. It is offered during a four-week period of 36 clock hours. Students will earn two (2) semester credits, consisting of both teacher and student directed learning inclusive of classwork, group work, and required and/or recommended readings and assignments.

This course in special education provides a comprehensive exploration of all the categories of exceptional children. It includes all eligibility requirements for students with disabilities. It emphasizes the importance of inclusion of exceptional students in the mainstream classroom and support of students with disabilities in the regular classroom. In this course, students will seek to understand the different categories of exceptional children and will learn how to apply the information about disabilities within a regular classroom setting.


This course comprises lectures, home assignments and mid and end-semester assessments. It is offered as 4 weeks of instruction, recess/review, assessment and examination. Students who earn 2 credits for SPED 201 spend 6 hours each week on this course, in a mixture of faculty-led teachinglearning (2 hour) and student-directed learning (4 hours) on review of lectures or classwork, group work, required or recommended readings and home assignments.

This course in Special Education provides an in-depth understanding of Response to Intervention (RTI) and the Individualized Education Plan (IEP), two critical frameworks used to support students with various learning needs. Participants will examine the multi-tiered RTI model designed to identify and assist struggling learners. They will also explore strategies for effective interventions.


The course also covers the legal and procedural aspects of developing, implementing and monitoring IEPs for students with disabilities. Participants will learn how to collaborate in creating personalized support systems that promote student success. The participants will discover how these methods are interconnected and contribute to creating educational environments that are inclusive.
